Google Doodle pulled out all of the stops to celebrate Earth Day 2024, when the digital giant used aerial images from around the world to spell out the name of the iconic search engine on Monday, April 22. According to Google's write up that accompanied the design, the 2024 doodle was all about promoting sustainability and the importance of conservation efforts, which can help protect some of the planet's most endangered regions.

It's no surprise that Google's Earth Day doodle focused on places with such biodiversity, since the 2024 Earth Day theme is "Planet vs. Plastics." Planners seem hopeful that the theme will help the numerous people who celebrate Earth Day to remember the importance of reducing our reliance on single-use plastics while prompting them to find more sustainable options to help cut back on pollution caused by plastics.

The Google Doodle included a minute-long video to commemorate Earth Day 2024.

Google shared how it came to choose the locations used to spell out the letters of the company's name. The team opted for regions where people are hard at work protecting their local resources, biodiversity, and more. The statement explains how they had hoped that these examples would inspire optimism while also reminding viewers of how much work was left to be done.

Part of the reason Google chose to make this its 2024 message was because of how many people use the website to search for tips for sustainable living — including ways to use less electricity, ways to conserve water, and how to be more mindful when it comes to the planet's other resources — and the company thought that this would be a great way to remind curious clickers of exactly why they're working so hard to make changes in their day-to-day lifestyles.

Meet the Earth Day Google Doodle letters.

In addition to their conservation efforts, these locations were picked because of their unique shapes, each of which spells out a letter of the search engine's name:

G: Turks and Caicos Islands

O: Scorpion Reef National Park, Mexico

O: Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

G: Jaú National Park, Brazil (AKA: Parque Nacional do Jaú)

L: Great Green Wall, Nigeria

E: Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves, Australia .

Large corporations need to make the biggest changes when it comes to conservation and reducing pollution. We love the sentiment of the Google Doodle for Earth Day 2024, but Google's sustainability plan, including its central sustainability goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, could be doing so much more. After all, net-zero emissions isn't really saying much. We'd love to see even more from Google in terms of protecting the planet.
